Today we welcome new advice released today to the government by Public Health England (PHE), which recommends that everyone take a daily vitamin D supplement of 10 micrograms (400IU) to protect bone and muscle health during autumn and winter.
The advice, which sees the supplementation advice broaden from ‘at risk’ groups to everyone, is based on the recommendations of the Scientific Advisory Committee on Nutrition (SACN) following its review of the evidence on vitamin D and health.
However, we are concerned as the guidelines suggest that the majority of the population will get enough vitamin D (400IU) through sunlight on the skin and through a healthy balanced diet during summer. But even during summer months in the UK, we simply are not getting enough vitamin D. We tend to cover up with a high factor sun cream and wear clothing to protect skin and therefore the UVB rays do not reach or penetrate the skin.
Also just 10 percent of vitamin D is available through diet, and with increasingly sedentary, indoor lifestyles now the norm, people not sufficiently exposed to the sun may not synthesise enough vitamin D in order to meet psychological requirements.
Better You have always recommended year-round supplementation and developed a vitamin D Oral Spray range (DLux) to ensure optimum delivery and guarantee absorption levels all year round.
We’ve been waiting a long time for the SACN report to be published as the government’s current advice is that only at-risk groups should take a daily vitamin D supplement yet due to the lack of sunshine in the UK and cloudy conditions more and more of us are depleted in this essential which can lead to numerous health risks.
Supplementation is easy and cost-effective and our vitamin D oral sprays offer superior absorption and absolute convenience for adults and children alike. Research by Cardiff University has shown that by applying it directly onto the inner cheek it is absorbed through the soft inner mouth tissue and immediately enters the blood system guaranteeing a level of uptake which traditional tablets and capsules cannot.
Better you's DLux oral vitamin D spray range is listed in the NHS recommended product guide for vitamin D supplementation and comes in different strengths for people of all ages.
Multiple clinical trials have found that oral vitamin sprays elevate serum vitamin D levels faster than traditional tablets and capsules. A trial by the Swiss research facility Pharmabase found that, over a twelve-week clinical study, the uptake of vitamin D was 67% faster using an oral spray than using traditional tablets of the same strength. The absorption increased to 127% greater if the individual had insufficient levels to begin with. The National University of Athens looked at a similar comparison over only four weeks and found the oral spray to achieve a 52% greater absorption.
